Why Diamonds Lose Their Sparkle
Diamonds are the hardest material on Earth, so they won't scratch — but they are lipophilic, meaning they attract grease. Every time you cook, apply hand cream, touch your face, or wash your hands, a thin film of oil builds up on the diamond's surface. This oil blocks light from entering and exiting the diamond properly, dulling its sparkle.
The Weekly Home Clean (2 Minutes)
This works for both diamond and gold:
- Fill a small bowl with warm (not hot) water and add 2-3 drops of mild dish soap
- Soak the ring for 15-20 minutes
- Use a very soft toothbrush (baby toothbrush works perfectly) to gently brush around the diamond and under the setting
- Rinse under lukewarm running water (close the drain first!)
- Pat dry with a lint-free cloth
The Don'ts
- Never use toothpaste — despite the internet myth, toothpaste is abrasive and will scratch gold
- Never use bleach or harsh chemicals — they can damage the alloy metals in gold
- Never clean with ultrasonic cleaners at home unless you know the ring has no fracture-filled diamonds
- Avoid wearing while swimming — chlorine can weaken gold alloys over time
Daily Habits That Protect Your Ring
- Put your ring on last when getting dressed (after perfume, hairspray, and lotions)
- Take it off when doing heavy lifting, gardening, or cleaning
- Store it in a soft pouch or dedicated ring box — not loose in a drawer where it can scratch other jewellery
- Get a yearly professional check-up to ensure prongs are tight and stones are secure
