Lab-Grown vs. Mined Diamonds: The Truth Nobody Tells You

Lab-Grown vs. Mined Diamonds: The Truth Nobody Tells You

They're the Same Diamond. Literally.

Here's a fact that shocks most people: a lab-grown diamond and a mined diamond are chemically, physically, and optically identical. They're both pure carbon arranged in a cubic crystal structure. They both score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. They both refract light with the same fire and brilliance. Even expert gemologists cannot tell them apart without specialised lab equipment.

So why does one cost ₹3 lakhs and the other ₹90,000?

How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Created

There are two primary methods used to create lab-grown diamonds:

1. HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature)

This method replicates the natural conditions deep within the Earth. A tiny diamond seed is placed in a carbon-rich environment and subjected to temperatures above 1,400°C and pressure of 5-6 GPa. Over several weeks, carbon atoms arrange themselves around the seed, forming a rough diamond crystal.

2. CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition)

The more modern method. A diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas (usually methane). The gas is ionised into plasma using microwaves, and carbon atoms rain down onto the seed, building the diamond layer by layer. This method produces exceptionally pure Type IIa diamonds — the same grade found in only 2% of mined diamonds.

The Price Gap: Why Lab Diamonds Cost 60-80% Less

Mined diamonds pass through an average of 7-10 intermediaries before reaching the consumer: the mine, the sorter, the cutter, the polisher, the wholesaler, the distributor, and finally the retailer. Each adds a markup. The diamond mining industry also spends billions on marketing to maintain perceived scarcity.

Lab-grown diamonds bypass this entire chain. At Noore Jewels, we source directly from certified labs and set them in our own BIS hallmarked gold, passing the savings directly to you.

Environmental Impact: The Numbers Don't Lie

For every carat of mined diamond, approximately 250 tonnes of earth is displaced, 127 gallons of water consumed, and significant carbon emissions are generated. Lab-grown diamonds use a fraction of these resources and produce zero ecological destruction.

Certification: Your Guarantee of Quality

Every diamond at Noore Jewels comes with an IGI (International Gemological Institute) certification — the same institute that certifies mined diamonds globally. The certificate grades the diamond on the 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight. There is no difference in the grading standard between lab and mined.

The Bottom Line

A lab-grown diamond gives you the same sparkle, the same durability, and the same romantic symbolism — at a fraction of the price and with zero environmental guilt. The only question is: why would you pay more for the same thing?
